Everyday Explorers - teach science in afterschool programs in Boston through AmeriCorps

BYEN is seeking motivated individuals for the AmeriCorps Everyday Explorers program.

AmeriCorps is a national network of organizations with the goal of promoting community service at a grassroots level. AmeriCorps programs offer people who are committed to their communities an opportunity to serve in after-school programs and share their commitment with young people. The Everyday Explorers program focuses on science and technology related service activities, primarily environmental projects.

In addition to a bi-weekly living allowance, members receive an education award upon completion of their term of service.
The anticipated positions will require 450 - 900 hours of service for the term starting September 2010 and ending June or August 2011. This includes a minimum of 15 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 5 days per week. All members must attend mandatory Americorps meetings and trainings (including some Saturday sessions). They must also participate in Americorps Community Service Days.

Qualifications:


-A strong background, or serious interest, in the field of youth development
-Must be available to work standard shift hours: Monday through Friday, 2:30 – 6:00pm, as well as occasional trainings and special events outside of those hours. 16 hours of professional development are also required within the first year of employment.
-A minimum requirement of 10 hours of service to BYEN and/or at BYEN events
-All after school program staff must be fingerprinted and proven free of any criminal convictions before being hired. A current physical and TB/Mantoux test are also required.

Green & Grow School Year Apprenticeship Program

The Green & Grow Apprentice Program is a workforce development program that helps young Bostonians become effective and reliable employees through working and learning in an urban park.  The program combines job readiness training with career exploration, environmental education, academic support, team-building, personal attention from mentors and attractive compensation.  The Green & Grow Apprentice Program runs after school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays as well as on Saturdays, for ten months during the school year.

Program Overview:

Green & Grow Apprentices:

·         work directly with Conservancy staff to gain hands-on experience in horticulture, park maintenance and event management

·         receive support in writing resumes and preparing for interviews

·         participate in the Junior Achievement of Eastern Massachusetts job readiness program

·         explore a variety of environmental careers

·         receive academic support through tutoring and GED-preparation

·         engage in experiential learning activities that promote environmental sustainability and civic engagement

·         go on educational excursions

 

Program work requires being outside in all types of weather, kneeling or bending for long periods of time, lifting 25 pounds, etc.  Apprentices are required to facilitate two presentations during the program year.

 

 Who is eligible?

·         young people between the ages of 17-20

·         young people who are residents of Boston

·         young people enrolled in the Boston Public School system or enrolled in a GED program

·         young people who are recent graduates from a high school or GED program (summer internship only)

Pay:

·         apprentices are paid  $8.00 an hour

 

Program schedule:

·         Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 3:00 PM-6:00 PM

·         Saturdays from 10: 00 AM-4:00 PM

·         apprentices work a total of 15 hours per week

 

The first semester of the program is 15 weeks long and runs from September 16-December 21.

The second semester of the program is 22 weeks longs and runs from January 11-June 11th.
