Boston Grants Initiative - deadline 1/15/2009

NEW ENGLAND GRASSROOTS ENVIRONMENT FUND
BOSTON GRANTS INITIATIVE

January 15, 2009 APPLICATION DEADLINE
The New England Grassroots Environment Fund’s (NEGEF) announces a January 15, 2009 deadline for upcoming requests for proposals for their Boston Grants Initiative, a program designed to increase the number of community members involved in concrete actions that improve the quality of the environment and public health in Greater Boston. The program provides grants to groups working on environmental justice, environmental health, greenspace and other environmental projects in the neighborhoods of Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea or Somerville. Most projects come from small but emerging neighborhood groups.  Some may be part of a larger organization where the initiative would not proceed without additional, project-specific funding.
Prior Boston Grants Initiative awards have supported hiring part-time paid coordinators, youth stipends, purchasing tools and resources for community gardens, start up for a water quality monitoring program and engaging a community in understanding and monitoring a toxic site in their neighborhood. Grant awards range from $500 to $10,000, and groups should demonstrate volunteer involvement in their programs.
Grant applications Must Be Postmarked by January15, 2009.
Organizations interested in applying should contact NEGEF staff to discuss their project
before submitting a grant proposal.
NEGEF also offers a small grants program designed to foster local grassroots environmental initiatives in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.  It provides small grants of up to $2,500 to fuel local activism that leads to broader community involvement in projects that address a wide range of environmental issues and opportunities.  Local groups may be tackling an environmental health problem, addressing air quality or water pollution, urging citizen participation in wildlife habitat protection, working on energy or local land use challenges.

Whatever the issue, the Fund wants to move these efforts forward with its support. Deadlines for small grant program applications are to be postmarked by January 15, May 1 and September 15.
